Since January 2021, we\u2019ve been examining The Beatles\u2019 1965 work of genius, <\/em>Rubber Soul, taking deep dives into each track. Having concluded Side One, this month we took a short intermission to stand, stretch, and have a bit of fun. <\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We invited Fest for Beatles Fans poet Terri Whitney<\/strong> \u2014 who has written two books of poetry on The Beatles and other rock\u2019n\u2019roll greats \u2014 to serve as one of the judges in a POETRY CONTEST<\/strong> in her honor: The Rockin\u2019 Rhymer Poetry Contest<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thanks to all who submitted poems. They were all wonderful.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In My Life\/ Two of Us (or 6th july, 1957, the birth of the Beatles)<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

6th July, 1957<\/p>\n

Woolton church fete, on a beautiful sunny day<\/p>\n

Life became a song,<\/p>\n

When, John found Paul<\/p>\n

Soulmate found soulmate<\/p>\n

Music found magic,<\/p>\n

Loss found love,<\/p>\n

When Paths lead to home,<\/p>\n

Wrong Words and banjo chords,<\/p>\n

Found lost rhymes and a tuned guitar<\/p>\n

Together came<\/p>\n

Motherless sons, two<\/p>\n

They, cried<\/p>\n

Till nothing was left inside,<\/p>\n

On a neverending night<\/p>\n

Lines, in fully formed songs<\/p>\n

Songs, in half written lines<\/p>\n

Hands four played one melody,<\/p>\n

Strings across searching eyes<\/p>\n

Knee to knee,<\/p>\n

Growing and healing<\/p>\n

Memories,<\/p>\n

Longer and<\/p>\n

On a long road,<\/p>\n

John hugged Paul<\/p>\n

When the world changed<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And they<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Changed the world<\/p>\n

When Paul hugged John,<\/p>\n

On a road, long<\/p>\n

and longer memories<\/p>\n

Of healing and growing,<\/p>\n

Knee to knee<\/p>\n

Eyes searching, across strings<\/p>\n

One melody played four hands,<\/p>\n

Lines written, half in songs<\/p>\n

Songs formed fully in lines<\/p>\n

On a Night, neverending<\/p>\n

Inside, nothing was left<\/p>\n

Till they cried,<\/p>\n

Two Sons,<\/p>\n

Motherless<\/p>\n

Came together<\/p>\n

A tuned guitar and lost rhymes,<\/p>\n

Found banjo chords and wrong words<\/p>\n

Home lead to paths,<\/p>\n

When Love found loss,<\/p>\n

Magic found music,<\/p>\n

Soulmate found soulmate\u00a0,<\/p>\n

Paul found John, when<\/p>\n

A song came to life<\/p>\n

On a beautiful sunny day, Woolton church fete<\/p>\n

Off to Hamburg, popping Prellies<\/p>\n

Playing socks off, kiddies’ cheers<\/p>\n

Man, we’re groovy little group now<\/p>\n

Playing Cavern, Epstein hears<\/p>\n

Richly contract, muchy money<\/p>\n

Funny haircut, shiny suit<\/p>\n

Liddypool is distant memory<\/p>\n

Muchy fame and girls to boot<\/p>\n

Arty Yoko, avant gardly<\/p>\n

Wide-eyed Johnny, falls in lust<\/p>\n

Beatles crumbly, end of era<\/p>\n

Golden Apple turns to dust<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Uncle Sammy, John and Yoko<\/p>\n

Little Sean and baking bread<\/p>\n

Starting Over, not for muchly<\/p>\n

Mad assassin \u2013 Johnny\u2019s dead!<\/p>\n

Mom gave me her copy of Sgt. Pepper<\/p>\n

She bought the record<\/p>\n

Sometime in the ’80s<\/p>\n

The vinyl was missing, but the cover was still intact<\/p>\n

She gave it to me and said, \u201cI have listened to this album since I was your age in fact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like mother, like daughter<\/p>\n

Music is our common bond<\/p>\n

And every moment in our lives is connected to a song<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the way to elementary school<\/p>\n

Mom and I would listen to the 1<\/em> CD<\/p>\n

It became a daily ritual<\/p>\n

Driving down the street<\/p>\n

Me singing my heart out in the backseat<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t have real microphones<\/p>\n

So we just used our hands, you know<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Like mother, like daughter<\/p>\n

Music is our common bond<\/p>\n

And every moment in our lives is connected to a song<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Even years later<\/p>\n

I\u2019m in college about graduate<\/p>\n

And we still listen to The Beatles in the car<\/p>\n

As soon as the first note starts<\/p>\n

We get lost in the lyrics and forget everything else<\/p>\n

It’s truly an escape from the chaos this world creates<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Like mother, like daughter<\/p>\n

Music is our common bond<\/p>\n

And every moment in our lives is connected to a song<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sometimes we fight because we care<\/p>\n

Because we never want to hurt each other<\/p>\n

Or be unfair but<\/p>\n

With all the challenges we face<\/p>\n

The Beatles have ultimately brought us closer together<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Like mother, like daughter<\/p>\n

Music is our common bond<\/p>\n

And every moment in our lives is connected to a song<\/p>\n
